John Davidson
An attorney for over 30 years, John started early in his practice to seek ways to maintain his own health in the midst of the stress common to that profession.
Over twenty five years ago, John began to explore meditation, diet and intensive exercise as tools to control stress and improve professional performance. His exploration included yoga, qigong, Native American ceremonial practice, intensive nature meditations (sometimes called vision questing), trainings in working with the dying, and years of study of indigenous shamanic healing practices.
In time, this exploration eclipsed his law practice. John began to focus on the task of translating this variety of diverse cultural practices into practical and relevant tools for Americans of all ages and backgrounds. All of these tools deal with stress and the complexity of living in modern American culture, and greater skills are required.
The overriding theme that has emerged in this work is the centrality of the heart’s role in supporting human health and in igniting a passion of purpose in our lives. In particular, John emphasizes the need to learn the skill of heart centered attention as a foundation for all effective efforts at bringing about positive change in our lives.
While traveling in Nepal, India, and Peru, John has taken a particular interest in observing how children in relatively poor and remote agricultural areas seemed to be healthier than children of similar age in America. This simple observation led to an investigation of autism spectrum and learning disorders, which in turn led to the conclusion that our children are increasingly suffering from early onset health dysfunctions and disease that arise from the many social manifestations of the brain centric nature of our culture.
John has served for nine years on the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education; taught as an adjunct professor for several colleges; co-founded The Learning Center in Raton, New Mexico – an innovative approach to delivering higher education in under-served rural areas; and served on the White Commission on Presidential Scholars as an appointee of President Clinton. In 2007 John received the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award.
